The SISTEM51 hand-wound
SISTEM51 is Swatch's name for its 51-part fully-automated movement, originally launched in 2013 as an automatic. The Royal Pop houses a NEW hand-wound version of SISTEM51 — the first time the architecture has been adapted for manual winding. The decision to go hand-wound was deliberate: a pocket watch interaction loop centers on the wind and the case-open ritual.
The movement is assembled by industrial robots in Grenchen, Switzerland. There is no human hand in the SISTEM51 assembly chain. The 51 parts are screwed together rather than press-fit, and the entire movement is encapsulated and never serviced — when it stops, you replace it.
Power reserve is 90 hours from a full wind — significantly longer than the typical 40-hour reserve of comparable hand-wound calibers.
Bioceramic, explained
Bioceramic is Swatch's plant-based polymer composite. It is approximately 65% castor oil-derived plastic and 35% ceramic powder. The resulting material is lighter than steel, warmer to the touch than ceramic, and accepts vivid color saturation. It can be injection-molded at scale, which is why Swatch can ship Royal Pop at $400 instead of $4,000.
Bioceramic's downsides: less scratch-resistant than sapphire-coated steel, and not heat-stable above ~80°C. Don't leave a Royal Pop on a car dashboard in summer.
40 mm case, two crown positions
Royal Pop ships in two case styles: Lépine (crown at 12 o'clock — the pocket-watch standard) at $400, and Savonnette (crown at 3 o'clock with a hinged front cover) at $420. The Savonnette adds a spring-loaded snap cover that protects the dial.

The SISTEM51 Hand-Wound Movement: A Weekly Wind Ritual
The SISTEM51 hand-wound movement, introduced by Swatch in 2023, marks a significant departure from its automatic predecessor. While the original SISTEM51, launched in 2013, relied on rotor-driven self-winding, this new iteration requires manual winding. This shift is particularly meaningful in the context of the AP × Swatch Royal Pop pocket watch, where the hand-wound mechanism aligns with traditional pocket watch conventions. The movement’s 90-hour power reserve ensures that winding becomes a weekly ritual, rather than a daily chore, offering a tactile connection to timekeeping that echoes the heritage of Audemars Piguet’s Lépine-style pocket watches.
Mechanically, the SISTEM51 hand-wound movement retains the hallmark features of its automatic sibling, including a single-piece construction with 51 components laser-assembled for precision. However, the absence of a rotor allows for a thinner profile, making it more suitable for pocket watch applications. The movement’s 90-hour reserve is achieved through a modified mainspring barrel and optimized gear train efficiency. This extended reserve is a practical feature for a pocket watch, as it reduces the frequency of winding sessions, ensuring reliability even if the watch is left unwound for a few days.
The winding process itself is a deliberate act, requiring approximately five seconds of rotation to fully wind the watch. This ritualistic aspect harks back to the Savonnette-style pocket watches of the 19th century, where winding was an intimate interaction with the timepiece. For enthusiasts, this tactile engagement adds a layer of appreciation for the craftsmanship behind the SISTEM51 movement, blending Swatch’s modern innovation with Audemars Piguet’s storied legacy.
Why 90 Hours Matters for a Pocket Watch
The 90-hour power reserve of the SISTEM51 hand-wound movement is not just a technical specification—it’s a thoughtful design choice tailored to the pocket watch format. Unlike wristwatches, which are often worn daily and benefit from automatic winding, pocket watches are typically carried less frequently. A longer power reserve ensures that the watch remains operational even if it’s not wound every day, making it a practical companion for modern lifestyles. This feature distinguishes the Royal Pop from its MoonSwatch counterparts, which rely on automatic winding and shorter reserves.
Historically, pocket watches were designed with extended power reserves to accommodate the irregular usage patterns of their owners. The SISTEM51 hand-wound movement continues this tradition, bridging the gap between historical functionality and contemporary engineering. For collectors and enthusiasts, the 90-hour reserve offers peace of mind, knowing that the watch will keep time accurately even after a weekend of disuse. This reliability, combined with the movement’s affordability at $400, makes the Royal Pop a compelling entry point into the world of high horology.
For buyers, the SISTEM51 hand-wound movement represents more than just a technical achievement—it’s an invitation to engage with timekeeping in a deliberate, almost ceremonial way. The weekly wind ritual transforms the act of keeping time into a personal tradition, connecting the wearer to the heritage of Audemars Piguet and the innovation of Swatch. In a world of instant gratification, the Royal Pop offers a slower, more meaningful interaction with time.
